Leadership Motives
As a school board member, you are an elected official. When it comes to leading, driving, and supporting excellence, it is essential that this is authentically part of your core “why.” Why did you run for office? Why does achievement and excellence matter to you? Is excellence your top priority and the lens through which you make decisions?
Your why informs your vision, communication, and entire approach to your board work. Today, re-examine your why. Consider your experiences as a student. Who encouraged you to believe in yourself, your potential, and your capability? Consider your experiences with students. Why are you drawn to impacting their lives? Are you ready to lay aside any personal motives and agendas to make them first?
After considering these questions, write your Core Why Statement.
“I seek to lead excellence in my district and for the students of my community because….”
Add your Core Why Statement to your foundational board documents. When you do your board work, pull this statement out and anchor your lens to this why. Establish your mindset to do your best work for the benefit of those you are serving.
